EDUC995 Dissertation First-Time Registration Request
To request first time registration for EDUC995 Dissertation, please read the information below prior to submitting the form:
Continuous registration requirement:
Penn GSE doctoral students (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) must register for EDUC995 Dissertation after they finish all required coursework. Doctoral students must be registered for EDUC995 until they graduate. Registration is not required during the summer; however, students who plan to use University facilities, take comprehensive or preliminary examinations, hold dissertation hearings, or graduate during the summer must register and pay summer tuition. Note that Ph.D. students are charged the Ed.D. rate in the summer (Please refer to GSE’s tuition and fees page).
Registration for EDUC995 typically rolls over from term to term, but in unusual situations, this may not occur. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm registration each term. Any doctoral student who fails to ensure they are registered each term for EDUC995 will be withdrawn from candidacy for the degree. Students on dissertation status who withdraw or fail to maintain continuous registration will be charged tuition for past semesters if they seek to re-register, to a maximum of six semesters.
Courseload:
EDUC995 Dissertation is a stand-alone course, meaning that students may not register for any other additional courses. The one exception is that students may audit one course per term with written approval from the instructor and the student’s advisor. Regular tuition and fees will be charged for audited courses. These approvals must be sent to gse-sro@gse.upenn.edu
Dissertation status definition:
Registration for EDUC995 does not mean that a student is on dissertation status. Dissertation status signifies that doctoral students have completed all coursework for the doctoral degree, taken the preliminary exam, and successfully defended the proposal at a hearing. After completion of coursework, but prior to the oral proposal hearing, students are registered for EDUC995-001. Once a student has completed their oral proposal hearing, the last three digits of EDUC995 will be updated to reflect the student’s dissertation chair (e.g. EDUC995-123).
Leave of absence:
Prior to dissertation status, doctoral students may apply for a leave of absence. Once a student has reached dissertation status, a leave of absence cannot be granted except for family leave, military leave, or medical leave that is approved. Students on dissertation status who withdraw or fail to maintain continuous registration will be charged tuition for past semesters if they seek to re-register, to a maximum of six semesters.
Enrollment status:
Please be aware that prior to registration for EDUC995, your enrollment status is based on the number of CUs registered for in a term. For the purpose of federal loan eligibility and in-school deferment eligibility, students must be registered at least half-time in any term, including summer. Half-time= 2 CUs or more. Full-time = 3 CUs or more, part-time= less than 3 CUs.
For both PhD and EdD students, EDUC995 registration designates the student as an active full-time student for university purposes, and as half-time for the purpose of federal loan eligibility and in-school deferment eligibility.
Gym access:
- Ph.D. students registered for EDUC995 are automatically billed the university general fee, and therefore will have uninterrupted access to the gym
- Ed.D. students are not automatically billed the university general fee; access will be interrupted unless the student elects to pay the university general fee, or purchases a Campus Recreation membership plan
